Experience the quirky, intoxicating and virtuosic nature of the Baroque.

Performed by Phoenix Baroque Trio, this concert will highlight the quirky, intoxicating and virtuosic nature of the Baroque: great works by master composers BACH and VIVALDI, and just as impressive works by lesser-known composers CASTELLO, BIBER and SCHMELZER.

Dan Russell, Artistic Director and Violinist said, “There’s nothing quite like the sound of the harpsichord, and Baroque music in general”.

Harpsichordist Christian Lillicrap responded with, “The harmonies and melodies can be intensely moving and always delightful - it’s music designed for pleasure”.

In his first performance with Phoenix Collective, cellist Christopher Bennet added, “As a string player, Baroque music has always been a core part of my repertoire. I love the profundity of Bach, and while long drawn to the energy and excitement of Vivaldi – Biber, Schmelzer, Vitali and Castello are composers into whose music I have yet to delve.”

This is an eclectic program exploring the realms of tone colour, experimentation and virtuosity. “I’m very excited to bring this exceptional program to the concert stage”, said Dan.

Featured in this concert is a newly restored ‘c1750 Tyrolean violin’, set up scordatura with gut and crossed strings for Biber’s ‘The Resurrection Sonata’. This creates a fascinating comparison to the second half, which will be played on a 2009 violin from Cremona, Italy.

Built by Carey Beebe, the French double-manual Harpsichord is on tour, courtesy of Central Coast Conservatorium of Music. The instrument was purchased by music lovers of the Central Coast as a result of funds raised from The Crossroads Festival of Chamber Music – an initiative of Ruth and Peter Donnelly, now under the leadership of local violin doyen Charmian Gadd.
