Youth Art Project to Inspire Reduction of Single Use Plastics
The selected artwork will be used to promote the use of a sustainable resource (keep cup) allowing our local young people the opportunity to positively contribute to caring for the Central Coast environment.
Council Unit Manager Community Partnerships, Glenn Cannard said Council's Youth Strategy 2019-2024 found 77% of young people on the Coast identified caring for the environment as a key issue important to them, especially regarding plastic waste.
"Over 1,600 people contributed to shaping Council's first Youth Strategy and looking after our natural environment and taking action on environmental issues and challenges was a high priority for them," Mr Cannard said.
"This project also aligns with Council's Single Use Plastic Policy, which encourages the elimination of single use plastics at major public events held on Council property and public open spaces through the use of reusable or biodegradable foodware and banning balloons."
Entries open for submission of artworks from 18 June to 16 July 2020 and will be assessed on the artworks' ability to portray a strong 'Living Green' message and be used across multiple platforms.
The artworks will be assessed by a panel comprised of Council staff and Youth 4 Youth (Y4Y) action team members, with the community also able to vote from those selected for their favourite piece from 30 July to 20 August.
The artwork with the most votes will be selected the winning artist will be awarded a $500 gift voucher for Eckersley's Art & Craft.
Mayor Lisa Matthews said the project shows great initiative of our Y4Y team to engage young people and contribute to important social and environmental issues.
"I encourage all young people who are creative and care about the environment to participate in this art project and support the awareness campaign to reduce single use plastics on the Central Coast," Mayor Matthews said.
