On October 14th itís World Cavity-Free Future Day (WCFFDay). This yearís mission is to address the need for greater global awareness of dental caries, the disease which, when left unaddressed, can lead to dental cavities. WCFFDay aims to engage communities around the world and encourage action towards achieving a cavity-free future.

Why is World Cavity-Free Future Day Important?

Dental caries is the most common chronic disease on the planet, despite being largely preventable. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), worldwide 60–90% of school children and nearly 100% of adults suffer from cavities, which can dramatically impact the sufferers’ quality of life through pain and discomfort, missed days or decreased participation in school and work.

Helping individuals understand the importance of taking control of their oral health is critical for working towards reducing the number of people who develop cavities and helping secure a cavity-free future for generations to come.

The friendly and experienced team at Providence Medical & Dental, Belmont has compiled a list of 6 top tips to help prevent cavities this World Cavity-Free Future Day.

1. Brush properly

Regular and correct brushing really is the best way that you can keep your teeth and gums in tip top condition. To gain the maximum benefit from brushing, you should brush for at least two minutes morning and night, using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and a flexible neck. The advantage of these toothbrushes is that they remove the plaque and debris from your teeth without damaging your teeth and gums.

2. Don’t forget to floss

If you aren’t already doing so, flossing at least once a day is recommended. Floss is able to get into the space between the teeth and gums, removing much of the food and plaque that a toothbrush can’t. Try carrying a floss travel pack in your hand bag or wallet or leave at work for easy access.

3. Visit your dentist regularly

Don’t put off going to the dentist because you aren’t in pain, regular trips to the dentist can catch potential problems before they become larger, painful and expensive ones. Your dentist can also provide a thorough clean using specialist equipment that will help to retain your beautiful smile. Most dentists recommended a check-up, clean and polish every 6 months.

4. Hydrate for healthy teeth

Water really is the best thing to drink for the health of your body and your teeth! Water with fluoride is vital to building strong teeth. Tap water also helps to supply the mouth and teeth with other useful minerals, flush away bad bacteria and keep the inside of your mouth healthy and hydrated. Water is also sugar free and calorie free, so you can drink as much as you like without it damaging your teeth!

5. Eat smile friendly foods

Yes, that’s right, some foods are actually good for your teeth. These include cheese, vegetables, fresh fruit, unsweetened coffee and even unsweetened tea. Each has specific properties that makes them beneficial for your smile. Eating a healthy and balanced diet is important for optimal oral health.

6. Quit Smoking

We all know that smoking is bad for your health, but it is also incredibly bad for your teeth and gums. It can cause staining in a very short amount of time, as well as bad breath, gum disease, decay, infection, tooth loss and in some cases even cancer. Your gums are particularly at risk as smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream so that infected gums struggle to heal.
