Top Tips for Keeping Healthy and Well this Festive Season

The holiday season is upon us! For most of us this means Christmas parties, celebrating and running around crazily trying to fit in as much as possible in not enough time.
However, you don't have to forget your health and wellbeing just because it's the Christmas holidays - and you don't have to miss out on those Chrissy foods you love, either.

It's about moderation, planning and setting boundaries and the team at Providence Medical has compiled a list of 7 easy to follow tips to help keep you healthy and well this Christmas.

Be Sun Safe
Most of us Aussies love the summer heat, but it is important to stay in the shade whenever possible. Try to limit your time in the direct sunshine between 10am and 4pm, when UV exposure is at its peak. If you are going to be outside, be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure. It is also a good idea to wear a hat and sunglasses whenever possible.

Keep Moving
Remember even though it is a busy time of the year you can still make time to exercise.  Even just 30 minutes of exercise a day can make a difference and simple things like a walk along the beach or going for a swim in the ocean can keep your body active and enjoying the benefits of exercise.

Stay Hydrated
It can be difficult to stay properly hydrated with the warm weather and increased alcohol consumption.  Watch your urine colour; if it's dark you probably need to up your fluid intake.

Drink Responsibly
Well, it’s no secret alcohol isn’t very good for us. But it’s party season – so just be mindful of your alcohol intake. Try and alternate with a glass of water and remember to eat before you drink.

Enjoy Quality over Quantity
Reframe your mindset to focus on selecting good quality foods, but in smaller portions. If you want to enjoy the traditional foods of Christmas. Christmas is typically a time of overindulgence, but what we eat can sometimes impact on how we feel. For example, too much sugar can have a noticeable effect on mental health and wellbeing. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a little bit of overindulgence, but a good tip is to balance this out over the festive period – everything in moderation! Be sure to include plenty of fruit and vegetables into your diet, the more colour the better.

Relax and Recharge
The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to take some time out of your day to day life and gain some perspective to reflect on the year. It’s important to take some much- deserved time out to unwind, relax and reset.

See your GP
If you have any health and wellness concerns at all, please see your doctor and they can support you. Have you had your regular skin check? Are you travelling and need vaccinations? Remember prevention is better than cure and our team is here for you and your loved ones over the holiday season and beyond.

Our friendly, caring and experienced team at Providence Medical, are open over the festive season and we wish you all a happy, healthy and safe Christmas and a fantastic New Year!
