The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games are still two years away, but Japan is already hosting some of the world’s best swimmers and Paralympic champions including our Aussie swim teams. Coast Sport Principal Physiotherapist and Director, Brett Doring has recently returned from a tour of Japan with the Australian Paralympics Dolphins Swim Team.

This tour was designed to rehearse the teams plans for the 2020 Paralympic swimming competition, helping them to acclimatise in the lead up to the games. Doring and the athletes support team were there to gain an understanding of the facilities available and any challenges that the team need to prepare for in the lead up to 2020, and to help monitor and maintain the physical wellness of the team during the tour.

The team were able to test drive a variety of key elements in preparation including accommodation, travel and training venues. Doring explains that “preparation is vital for the athletes to ensure they go into the meet knowing what to expect”. He goes on to explain that “during the trip we were able to gather valuable information in order to gain a better understanding of the culture, food, transport and geography”.

14 of Australia’s top ranked Paralympic swimmers participated in the tour which involved spending a night in Tokyo on arrival before taking the bullet train to Nagaoka. The team then took the bullet train to Yokohama where they competed for 3-days at the Japan Para Open competition from 22nd-24th September. Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, Spain and United States were some of the countries represented.

Doring plays an integral role as a Physiotherapist on tour with the Australian Swim team and Paralympic Swim team ensuring they are able to perform at their best. He looks forward to continuing to support them in their pursuit for greatness at the Tokyo Games in 2020.
