Have you ever wondered how doctors and nurses cope with the pressure? Playwright David Williams asks the questions we’re all thinking in his latest docu-theatre production Grace Under Pressure.

Produced by Alternative Facts and supported by The Big Anxiety and Sydney Arts & Health Collective, Grace Under Pressure is a deeply moving work that gives a unique glimpse for the general public into the closed world of the health sector.

Medical professionals dedicate their lives to caring for us, and yet many are themselves suffering with excessive hours, bullying, harassment, and the stress of the job. So how might we, as a society, better care for our carers?

Based on interviews from real Australian health professionals, the words delivered on stage are taken directly from their experiences and stories.

“We’ve interviewed over 30 health professionals at various stages in their careers for Grace Under Pressure, and on the one hand I’ve been shocked at the frequency of terrible experiences within training and hospitals,” says co-writer and director David Williams. “On the other hand, I’ve been amazed by the passion and joy that these nurses and doctors bring to their work, and the grace with which these people face tremendous challenges in the face of life and death.”

Seated in the round, audiences hear these real tales ranging from the wildly funny to the utterly heartbreaking in an intimate environment, encouraging conversation and honesty as if between two friends.

This verbatim, immersive, and important performance is vulnerability defined, with nowhere to hide and everything to share.

Grace Under Pressure is a work with a clear sense of social purpose, complexly enriched with the observations of those who are responsible for us in hospitals and whose own lives are subject to often inordinate pressures. We need to care for them. […] Grace Under Pressure should be seen widely, so that what is often just news becomes knowledge, becomes action.” Keith Gallasch, RealTime

“a very effective and affecting verbatim work exploring the dysfunctional culture of the healthcare system.” Jason Blake, Sydney Morning Herald, 2 November 2017
