Stephen Sondheim, Titan of the Musical
Stephen Sondheim was an American composer and lyricist, one of the most important figures in 20th-century musical theatre and the inspiration for “Old Friends” Mark Trevorrow (Bob Downe), Rupert Noffs and Bev Kennedy to bring their musicianship and love of Stephen Sondheim’s extraordinary songbook together.
Sondheim who passed away in 2021 is credited with shows that tackle "unexpected themes that range far beyond the [genre's] traditional subjects" with works spanning from his first production “West Side Story” to his last “Into the Woods.”
Australia knows Comedian, singer, actor, broadcaster, and journalist Mark Trevorrow as the character Bob Downe although his 40+ year journey through Australian media and show business goes beyond his famous character, from arts editor of Vogue Australia, to acting in Kath & Kim. His work has taken him from London to New York & this new show includes long-time collaborator, Central Coast local actor, cabaret singer & restaurateur (Lucky Bee, Ettalong beach) a NIDA graduate and Sydney Conservatorium of Music drop-out Rupert Noffs.
“I first fell in love with the music of Stephen Sondheim at age 16 when I was asked to perform “Being Alive” at The Sydney Opera House for school graduation. The following year, I scored the role of Tony in West Side Story - when I should’ve been studying for my HSC & the rest is history” stated Rupert Noffs
One of Australia’s leading musicians and Musical directors Bev Kennedy completes the trio having worked on over 30 Professional music theatre productions including Billy Elliot, Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Chicago & Muriel’s Wedding. Most recently Bev has been nominated for a green room award for her work as Musical Director on the Australian Premiere of Gutenberg the Musical.
