Speeding blitz this May

By Central Coast Council
Posted: 27 Apr 2021
Locals and visitors to the Coast will see a heightened focus on speeding across May as NSW Police and Central Coast Council roll out a collaborative road safety initiative.

The clear message - Stop it. Or... cop it. - will be delivered through increased Police presence and enforcement on 50km/hr roads and a Council-led education campaign.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Inspector Martin Searle said it was important to remind the Central Coast community and visitors to slow down and take care on local roads.

"Our goal is to help save lives and reduce the incidence and severity of speed-related crashes," Inspector Searle said.

"Speeding continues to be the biggest killer on our roads and contributes to 44 percent of all fatalities that occur on our region's roads.

"Drivers must observe speed limits at all times - 'just a bit over' can be the difference between being able to stop in time or not at all.

"Speeding is never ok. There are many factors outside a driver's control and the unexpected can happen at any time. Other people can make mistakes on the road - it is difficult to know what is up ahead.

"We are asking the community to make road safety a priority and slow down, particularly in built up urban areas with 50km/hr zones where vulnerable road users like children, the elderly, cyclists and pedestrians can be."

Council Administrator, Dick Persson AM said it is important to work collaboratively to reduce speeding across the region.

"You will notice an increase in our messaging aimed at reducing speeding across May and this will work in conjunction with an increased Police presence on targeted roads across the Coast.

"Education can have a big impact on changing behaviours - we're encouraging Coasties to drive safely and look out for each other."
