Show of Superhuman Strength Set to Leave the Central Coast Speechless
Audiences will be on the edge of the seat as performers are held suspended in mid-air by only their head, stand on each other’s shoulders 4 people high, and play jump rope over their partners who are precariously swung by hand and foot.
The athletic skill combined with breathtaking theatrical brilliance, makes Backbone a truly unique show that appeals to both the family who love the circus, the theatre-lover, the gymnast, and the gym junkie.
Calling to mind popular trends such as Australian Ninja Warrior, and our own Central Coast’s group Akrobatika’s golden buzzer performance on Australia’s Got Talent, this show tests the limits of strength - physical, emotional, individual and collective.
Formed in Adelaide in 2009, Gravity and Other Myths have been performing at festivals across the globe and are currently on tour in France and Canada. This tour sees Backbone’s first performances in NSW since the 2018 Sydney Festival.
Described as ‘circus that goes straight for the throat’, Backbone does away with the frills, excess, and ornamentation, leaving an up close, daring, sexy, and contagiously joyful 80 minutes.
The performers’ agility and stamina are beyond impressive. The trust they must have in each other and their absolute focus and understanding of limits is nothing short of spectacular. This is new kind of circus. – The Barefoot Review
Circus, as you’ve never seen it before, pushed to its conceptual and cerebral limits. A genre-defying, thought-provoking, visual extravaganza … so intensely beautiful it makes you proud to be human. – InDaily
