Put your health first this Mother’s Day!
With Mother's Day coming up, Providence Medical provides some top tips for optimal women’s health.

Mums today are leading busier more hectic lives and have a natural tendency to let themselves slip low on the priority list when it comes to looking after their own health and wellbeing.

However, the health of those we love starts with us. By investing more time in ourselves, we are better able to look after the ones we love and care about.

Providence Medical wants to wish all our lovely local mums a very happy and healthy Mother’s Day and have compiled a quick list of tips to help mums get on top of their health.

Eat a Healthy and Balanced Diet

You want to eat as close to a natural foods diet as you can, this means a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods. Eat whole grains and high-fibre foods and choose leaner cuts of meat, fish, and poultry.

Be Heart Smart

Heart disease is a factor in one in every five deaths of Australian women. It kills three times more women than breast cancer and is responsible for the deaths of more than 100,000 women over the past decade. Have you had a heart health check recently? If you haven’t, please ask your GP.

Watch Your Stress Levels

A common issue for many of our patients who are mums is that they have too much on their plates and want to juggle it all. Stress can have significant health consequences, from infertility to higher risks of depression, anxiety, and heart disease. Find the stress-reduction method that works for you and stick with it, be it yoga, meditation, a walk in the park or a chin wag with your friends, do what you enjoy and don’t neglect it.

See Your GP Regularly

Having regular health checks with your GP is important in maintaining optimal health. These can include checking your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Cervical screening, mammograms and other female related medical tests also need to be scheduled just like you do for other important appointments.

Find Time to Relax

It's important to take some time to decompress, have some time to yourself and unwind.

Some ideas to help you “chillax”:

  • get a massage and/or acupuncture
  • attend a class or do some meditation
  • have a warm bath
  • take a day trip to a beach or national park
  • have a movie day with friends
  • start a journal
  • learn how to play a new instrument
  • cook a meal that you've been wanting to try and relax while doing it.

Do More than Cardio

Women need a mix of cardio and resistance or weight-bearing exercise at least three to five times a week to help prevent osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Exercise also promotes good self-image, which is important to a woman's mental health.

Have Good Sex

Sex reduces stress and may lower the risk of chronic disease -- but only if you enjoy it. If anything prevents you from sexual fulfillment, such as dryness or pain, talk to your doctor to find a solution. They can also assist you with the most suitable form of contraception where needed too.

Get Your Skin Checked

Most mums neglect to have their annual skin check, yet Australians are hit hard by skin cancer every year. Approximately, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70 so it is worth the annual check with your doctor to avoid becoming another statistic.

Get More Sleep

Sleep needs do differ, but if you have trouble getting out of bed, tire easily, or have trouble concentrating, you likely aren't getting enough. Recent studies suggest this can put you at greater risk of heart disease and psychological problems.

Put your health first this Mother’s Day!

There’s a difference between taking care of your health and being selfish. Remind yourself that your health is actually more important than anyone else’s! when mum goes down with illness everyone goes down. So, put yourself first, you deserve to live the best, most healthy and fullest life possible.
