Across the world, men die an average six years younger than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable. Which means that it doesn’t have to be that way: we can all take action to live healthier, happier and longer lives.

It’s that time again, Movember is upon us and popular GP at Providence Medical Warners Bay, Dr Sydney Bourke is supporting this great cause and is getting involved this year by participating in Move for Movember and also by Growing a Mo. Bourke is “raising funds to tackle some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and poor mental health” and is urging the local community to “help stop men dying too young”.

Make your Move this Movember

Make your Move is all about challenging yourself to get physically active and raise funds for men’s health. Participants can do this by putting one foot in front of the other by running/walking 60 kilometres over the month. That’s 60 kilometres for the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour of every day.

Anyone can get involved! you don’t have to be an ultra-athlete or own the latest gadgets. Hit it fast hit is slow. Run solo or join a team, go outside or jump on a treadmill. Make a Move can be done at your pace in your style.

Grow a Mo

Your Mo can inspire donations, conversations and real change. The men’s health crisis calls for big minds, and big solutions. But there’s a smaller, hairier solution to the men’s health crisis. A solution you can Grow yourself. It’s sitting under your nose. Grow a Mo this Movember and help stop men dying too young.

We are incredibly proud of Dr Syd as he jumps on the Movember band wagon again this year, you can help him and his quest by making a donation at the medical practice or by clicking on link below to make an online donation.

5 things we can we do to help improve men’s health in Australia this Movember:

1. Make man time

Stay connected. Your mates are important and spending time with them is good for you. Catch up regularly, check in and make time.

2. Have open conversations

You don’t need to be an expert and you don’t have to be the sole solution, but being there for someone, listening and giving your time can be life-saving.

3. Get to know your GP

At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it’s right for you to get tested. You should also know if you are at risk of any other health related issues, as early detection is crucial. Get to know your GP, build a good relationship with them and try not to be embarrassed or anxious, they are here to help.

4. Know thy nuts. Simple

Get to know what’s normal for your testicles. Give them a check regularly and go to the doctor if something doesn’t feel right.

5. Move, more.

Add more activity to your day. Do more of what makes you feel good and get moving more.

If you have any concerns about your health, please see your doctor. The team at Providence Medical will be happy to assist and are welcoming new patients.
