Concerts that will excite and inspire the virtuous flair of Italian Baroque

An initiative of violinist Dan Russell, Phoenix Collective Concert #2 features an exquisite French, double-manual Harpsichord bringing to life music of the Baroque Period.

Dan, together with harpsichordist Christian Lillicrap and Andrew Wilson on cello, will perform virtuosic works from the Italian Baroque period by Tartini, Corelli, Biber, Vivialdi and J.S. Bach.

"Audiences will be thrilled by fast virtuosic playing and sublime melodies from master composers such as Bach and Vivaldi,” says Dan Russell, an accomplished performer in Australia and abroad, who also teaches violin at Central Coast Conservatorium. “This is a truly intimate concert, to be up close and personal with an exquisite harpsichord matched perfectly with violin and cello," he said.

Dan collaborates with some of Australia’s most unique, talented and high-profile musicians.

“I’m excited to be playing such fantastic music on a wonderful harpsichord with two really passionate musicians,” says harpsichordist Christian Lillicrap. “It’s the sound of the harpsicord that really makes the music from the Baroque period come to life!”

“Chamber music is the most intimate and expressive form of composition. Dan has picked a fabulous mix of virtuosic German and Italian Baroque violin music, masterpieces full of explosive fireworks and descriptive chiaroscuro that will be enormous fun to play and brilliantly entertaining to watch,” says cellist Andrew Wilson.

Built by Carey Beebe, the French double-manual Harpsichord is on tour, courtesy of Central Coast Conservatorium of Music. The instrument was purchased by music lovers of the Central Coast as a result of funds raised from The Crossroads Festival of Chamber Music – an initiative of Ruth and Peter Donnelly, now under the leadership of local violin doyen Charmian Gadd.

Phoenix Collective showcases classical music with a uniquely Australian edge. The 2018 concert series offers a feast of exciting musical genres. Upcoming Concerts offer the charm of Mozart’s classical genius, the passion of Argentinean tango legend Astor Piazzolla, and the intense emotions of the late romantic and meditative calm of minimalist music.
