‘Live Your Life’ Expo to Educate and Inspire People with Diabetes on the Central Coast
For the first time, Diabetes NSW & ACT is bringing its leading diabetes education event, the ‘Live Your Life’ Expo, to the Central Coast of NSW on Saturday May 12.
To be held at the Mingara Recreation Club, the full-day program promises to educate and inspire those living with diabetes, through sessions tailored to the specific needs and interests of those living with either type 1 or type 2.
Sturt Eastwood, CEO of Diabetes NSW & ACT said, “The Live Your Life Expo is all about providing people living with diabetes, their families, friends and carers with the latest and most relevant information so they can better manage their diabetes. There’s almost 20,000 people on the Central Coast living with diabetes and we want to ensure they have the information and support they need to manage their condition and live well.”
“The Expo will also provide a fantastic opportunity for people to share experiences and connect with others in the local area. Having a strong support network is important for those living with diabetes and we’re glad we can play a part in making that happen through this event,” said Sturt.
Lisa Harris, who will be speaking at the Expo, has been living with type 1 diabetes for 45 years.
Her father, Stanley Clark, revolutionised diabetes management with his invention of the world’s
first portable, battery operated blood glucose monitor.
It was Lisa’s diagnosis at just 5 years old that motivated Stanley, an electronics engineer, to put his skills and passion for inventing into something that would help his much loved daughter. Lisa remembers the freedom the machine brought to her and other children living with type 1 diabetes and the pressure it took off their families.
“Our family was involved in something that changed the way diabetes is managed,” says Lisa. “My father helped to revolutionise diabetes care and I hope to support others in the same way my father supported me.”
“I really encourage people living with diabetes and their families to come along to the Expo and the other events organised by Diabetes NSW & ACT. It’s great way to stay on top of new developments in diabetes care and connect with others in the local diabetes community.”
Diabetes NSW & ACT is bringing a range of experts to the Central Coast Expo who will cover topics as varied as diabetes technology, eating out, maintaining your motivation to move and the importance annual health checks. There will also be many opportunities to talk to diabetes educators, exercise physiologists and dietitians throughout the day.
