Joelistics and ARIA-nominated producer James Mangohig are icons of Australian hip-hop, but their family histories are as complex and layered as their lyrics.

Both Australians with Asian-born fathers, their respective heritages are woven through their experiences growing up in Australia. Now in a breathtaking 70 minutes of beats, raps and storytelling these two hip hop artists let you in to their family histories and take to the stage to explore what it means to grow up Asian in Australia.

The performers don’t shy away from contentious subjects. Joelistics grew up in Sydney when racist rhetoric and bullying spiked following Pauline Hanson’s famous warning that, “We are in danger of being swamped by Asians”. He tackles this head-on, rapping back to Hanson, serving up doses of the ugly rhetoric of that time.

There’s humour, too: from a nightclub-owning grandma in an open marriage to globetrotting parents with a political streak, the pair lovingly paint a canvas filled with failed proposals and religious strictures, casual racism and empowerment through music, all against the backdrop of a live video clip that goes from the Chinese underworld, to the rice fields of the Philippines, to swinging London and the legendary Sydney nightclub Chequers.

Fundamentally, this is an evening of Australian family stories, ones that cross continents, countries, and cultures. Each man presents distillations of parents, grandparents, and siblings, as the other performer underscores the tale with beats and notes on the guitar, bass, beat machine, and keyboards.

Described by The Music in a 4.5 Star review as “a thrilling hour of theatre”, In Between Two serves to explain “why a diverse cultural landscape should not only be encouraged in Australia but is essential.”
