The third round of the NSW Government, Heritage Activation Grants Program for publicly accessible local heritage items is now open for application.

The NSW Government, through the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), is committed to ensuring that our heritage is valued, protected, and enjoyed.

Heritage Near Me is an initiative of OEH that aims to protect, share and celebrate the diverse heritage values in NSW for future generations. The program aims to invest in communities for long term benefits and local heritage legacies to ensure that local heritage values have greater recognition.

The Heritage Near Me Heritage Activation Grants program seeks to support the implementation of projects that actively increase community interaction and participation with publicly accessible heritage items listed in a local council’s Local Environment Plan (LEP).

This program recognises the importance of activating local heritage spaces and precincts to conserve their heritage significance.

Applications will only be accepted from owners or managers of heritage items that are listed on LEPs and regularly accessible to the public. A heritage item must have regular, clearly defined and publicly promoted opening hours.

Projects must benefit heritage items listed on LEP’s and encourage public use and enjoyment. Eligible projects could include:

  • physical construction, reconstruction and conservation works necessary for public access and activation
  • fire, safety, access or building services upgrades, compliance and upgrading works to meet current Building Code Australia, the Disability Discrimination Act and Work Health and Safety Act requirements
  • the professional development of strategic, business, marketing and programming plans to support community-based, participatory, sustainable and sympathetic works
  • one-off events

Grant requests between $10,000 and $100,000 will be considered.
