Grace Under Pressure
More poignant than ever after the events of 2020, this immersive and important theatre experience is vulnerability at its best, with nowhere to hide and everything to share.
Playwright David Williams asks the questions we are all thinking in his signature verbatim “docu-theatre” style, scripted from interviews with real Australian health professionals. How do they cope with the pressure? How do they manage the hours and life at home? How might we, as a society, better care for them as our carers?
Produced by Alternative Facts and supported by The Big Anxiety and Sydney Arts & Health Collective, Grace Under Pressure is a moving and eye-opening work that gives a unique glimpse for the general public into the closed world of the health sector.
“We’ve interviewed over 30 health professionals at various stages in their careers, and on the one hand I’ve been shocked at the frequency of terrible experiences within training and hospitals,” says co-writer and director David Williams. “On the other hand, I’ve been amazed by the passion and joy that these nurses and doctors bring to their work, and the grace with which these people face tremendous challenges in the face of life and death.”
Seated in the round, audiences hear these tales ranging from the wildly funny to the utterly heartbreaking in an intimate environment, encouraging conversation and honesty as if between two friends.
The stories of Grace Under Pressure come to The Art House Studio for three shows in May. Join this thought-provoking and beautiful staged experience.
“Grace Under Pressure is a work with a clear sense of social purpose, complexly enriched with the observations of those who are responsible for us in hospitals and whose own lives are subject to often inordinate pressures. We need to care for them. […] Grace Under Pressure should be seen widely, so that what is often just news becomes knowledge, becomes action.” Keith Gallasch, RealTime
“a very effective and affecting verbatim work exploring the dysfunctional culture of the healthcare system.” Jason Blake, Sydney Morning Herald, 2 November 2017
