Entries for the annual Mental Health Art Works! Exhibition are now open!
The 10-day event held each October during Mental Health Month, is a celebration of creativity and Mental Health; bringing it into the light and working to reduce the stigma faced by those with a lived experience of mental illness.
In 1999, the inaugural Mental Health Art Works! Exhibition was held at the Gosford Regional Gallery. It has continually grown over the past 21 years to become a much-anticipated event.
Last year over 190 budding artists entered the exhibition, making it the biggest exhibition in the 21 year history of the event. Artists ranged in age from 5 years old to 92 years old and came from all walks of life. Acting CEO of Coast & Country Primary Care, Sandi Spierings, says “Last year we saw more artists exhibit than ever before, and this year we are hoping even more local people share their story through their artwork at the exhibition.”
To be eligible to enter the exhibition, artists must have a lived experience of mental illness; as an individual, a family member, friend or carer, or as a volunteer or worker in the mental health sector. Each year artists exhibit a diverse range of pieces in various mediums including painting, sculpture, drawings, ceramics, photography, and writing. The exhibition provides those whose lives have been affected by mental illness the opportunity to use art as a form of expression, and to engage the community in a better understanding of mental health issues.
“If you are considering entering, you just need to get your entry form in by Sunday 29 August. Your artwork doesn’t need to be ready until early October.” Mrs Spierings says.
The exhibition will be held from 9th to 17th October in the Community Gallery at Gosford Regional Gallery.
