The annual Mental Health Art Works! Exhibition, organised by local not-for-profit Central Coast Primary Care, has opened entries for the 2020 event. The 8-day exhibition held during Mental Health Month in October is a celebration of creativity and Mental Health; bringing it into the light and working to reduce the stigma faced by those with a lived experience of mental illness.

In 1999, the inaugural Mental Health Art Works! Exhibition was held at the Gosford Regional Gallery. It has continually grown over the past 21 years to become a much anticipated event during Mental Health Month each year.

Last year over 145 artists entered the exhibition, making it one of the biggest exhibitions in the 20 year history of the exhibition. Artists ranged in age from 9 years old to 78 years old and came from all walks of life. The CEO of Central Coast Primary Care, Michelle Bradbury, says “Last year we saw more artists exhibit than ever before, and this year we are hoping even more local people share their story through their artwork at the exhibition.”

To be eligible to enter the exhibition, artists must have a lived experience of mental illness; as an individual, a family member, friend or carer, or as a volunteer or worker in the mental health sector. Each year artists exhibit a diverse range of artworks in various mediums including painting, sculpture, drawings, ceramics, photography, and writing. The exhibition allows those whose lives have been affected by mental illness the opportunity to use art as a form of expression and engage the community in a better understanding of mental health issues.

“If you are considering entering, you just need to get your entry form in by Sunday 30 August. Your artwork doesn’t need to be ready until early October.” Bradbury says.

The exhibition will be held from 14-20 October at the Community Gallery at Gosford Regional Gallery.

To enter the exhibition, visit the website to download an entry pack or enter online, or you can call 02 4365 2294 for more information.
