“Watch Your Mouth” this August!
Dental Health Week, which takes place in the first full week of August, is the Australian Dental Associationís major annual oral health promotion campaign. Its aim is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health in every aspect of their lives.

August 6th to 12th marks Dental Health Week! This year’s aim is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health by promoting these key messages:

“Watch Your Mouth”- How to Correctly Brush your Teeth:
• Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
• Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush
• Eat a healthy balance diet and limit sugar intake
• Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment.

How you Brush Matters

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your dental care routine.

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t give much thought to how you brush your teeth, beyond squirting on some toothpaste and scrubbing back and forth. But as your dentist will tell you, how you brush your teeth matters a great deal, with how often you brush, how long you brush, the kind of technique and the toothbrush you use are all major influences on the effectiveness of your brushing.

To gain the maximum benefit from brushing, see below Providence Medical & Dental in Belmont’s top tips on how to brush correctly this Dental Health Week:

  • At least 2 minutes
  • You should brush for at least two minutes morning and night. If you don't brush your teeth long enough, you may not be getting your teeth clean enough. If you leave behind bacteria on the teeth after brushing, it can lead to serious problems such as gingivitis or periodontitis.

All in the Technique

You should clean your teeth systematically, starting at the back of your mouth with the toothbrush bristle at the gum line on a 45° angle, brushing gently in a circular motion. You should take care to brush carefully along the inner, outer and chewing surfaces, making sure you tip the toothbrush, so you can reach the inner front areas of the teeth, which are often missed. Feel free to get your dentist to demonstrate the best technique for brushing at your next visit.

Not Too Hard

Brushing your teeth hard doesn’t mean cleaner teeth. If you scrub too hard from side to side, you can run the risk of causing your gums to recede, as well as damaging the tooth enamel.

Use the Right Brush

Using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and a flexible neck is optimal for brushing your teeth. The advantage of these toothbrushes is that they remove the plaque and debris from your teeth without damaging your teeth and gums. If you’re not sure which type of brush will work for you or your family, please check with your dentist.

Tilt It

To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

Replace Regularly

It’s also a good idea to replace your brush, whether manual or powered, when either the bristles start to spread apart, or every three months, whichever comes first.

So, “Watch Your Mouth” this Dental Health Week and make sure you and your family are brushing your teeth correctly. It is important to visit your dentist for regular check- ups to help maintain optimal oral health and wellbeing.

A fresh approach to your health care
