Council’s decision to close the boat ramp follows numerous safety concerns raised by residents, NSW Police, Transport for NSW - Maritime, local MPs, and Council staff regarding vehicle congestion, illegal parking, and potential hazards to the public from towing vehicles on the busy beach area.

Closing the boat ramp complements Maritime’s recent changes in this area, making a safer environment for swimmers, families, and beachgoers at Ettalong foreshore. Council has been working closely with Maritime to improve safety for beach and waterway users in this area. In response to the community feedback and safety assessments Maritime has now introduced a 300-metre zone that limits the foreshore beach area to paddlecraft only. 

Council Mayor Lawrie McKinna emphasised that the ramp closure makes our beach more accessible and safer for paddlers and swimmers and their families who enjoy the Ettalong foreshore.

“Ettalong Beach is popular with many in our community as well as visitors and holidaymakers to the area. This change supports a safer, more enjoyable experience for everyone. Council supports the recent paddlecraft Only rule, and by closing the boat ramp, we’re acting on community feedback and putting safety first.

“We want everyone to enjoy some on-water fun, being safe on the water is key.

“The Central Coast has many wonderful options for boaters and watercraft users nearby and we encourage them to make use of the well-equipped alternative boat ramps,” Mayor McKinna said. 

“This change isn’t just about safety, it is also about creating an improved, sustainable waterfront environment that everyone can enjoy.”

Council encourages powered boat and watercraft users to utilise nearby alternative boat ramps, including those at Blackwall (2.9 km away), Lions Park in Woy Woy (5 km away), and Correa Bay Reserve (6 km away). 

“We welcome all visitors to the area and encourage the use of our many formal boat ramps nearby, each offering designated parking and better facilities for launching,” Mayor McKinna added.
