The Central Coast Steiner School in NSW will soon install a 260-panel rooftop solar system, thanks to people across Australia donating funds to allow the provision of an interest-free loan to the school to reduce their carbon footprint.

Citizens Own Renewable Energy Network Australia (CORENA) is providing an interest-free loan for $68,094, with the school funding the remainder of the $74,903.40 full cost of the solar installation.

The 99 kW solar installation will avoid an estimated 127,750 kWh of grid electricity/year, which will result in carbon emissions reduction equivalent to 23 average homes using renewable energy instead of grid electricity. It's expected that solar will reduce the school electricity bills by thousands of dollars per year, and the CORENA loan will be repaid in 5.5 years.

The independent school catering for students from Early Kindergarten to Year 10, will have the solar system installed on the roof of a new school building that is to be built this December. The rooftop solar system will be installed during construction of this building.

School Principal, Rosemary Michalowski, states"Care for the natural environment is a fundamental underpinning of Steiner education. We educate students to be well-informed and responsible stewards of the world's natural resources. This investment in solar energy is in alignment with our commitment to a sustainable and just future for all."

CORENA operates Australia's longest running donor-driven revolving fund for practical climate action. The fund offers interest-free loans to not-for-profit and community organisations to pay for projects that reduce carbon emissions. Citizens who want to reduce emissions make donations via the CORENA website to collectively fund the loans for these projects. These donations are then returned to the fund in the form of loan repayments, and these funds, plus additional donations, are then used again to fund future projects.

This is CORENA's second interest-free loan to a Steiner school, following the installation of a 100 kW rooftop solar system at a Tasmanian Steiner school in 2020.

To date CORENA has provided $892,497 in interest-free loans and the Central Coast Steiner School is the 44th project to receive a CORENA loan.

CORENA's founder, Margaret Hender, said "Steiner Schools are noted for their climate-friendly initiatives, and we're delighted to now also help the Central Coast Steiner School to install solar. We welcome future project applications from more schools if they want help with reducing their carbon emissions."

Applications for new loans are very welcome. Anyone can nominate not-for-profit organisations to receive a future interest-free loan by contacting CORENA via their website here Donations to fund CORENA loans can also be made on the website.
