Central Coast Council beach patrol closed for season
The 2021/2022 summer season saw over 2.4 million visitations at the Coast’s 15 patrolled beaches during Council lifeguard patrolling periods. Staff completed a total of 746 rescues and treated over 1902 first aid incidents throughout the season.
Council Administrator, Rik Hart said both Council staff and Surf Life Saving volunteers who patrol the beaches on weekends have faced a number of challenges this year.
“We have had unusual weather conditions throughout the season with major storm events, resulting in extended beach closures due to poor water quality issues and risk of debris in the water along the East Coast,” Mr Hart said.
“Additionally, one of their biggest challenges this season was monitoring, and often responding to water emergencies at remote beach areas which are away from the flagged patrolled areas.”
Mr Hart said drones were again deployed during the season to assist Council operations at three of the monitored beaches: Ocean Beach, Avoca and The Entrance.
“These drones assist in increasing lifeguard reach outside patrolled flagged locations at the sites and are proving vital in beach safety.”
Mr Hart said keeping our community safe on our patrolled beaches is the top priority for both Council and local Surf Life Saving Club volunteers.
“Being able to identify rips and how to react in an emergency situation is a crucial step in minimising beach incidents, and we commend the Council lifeguard teams and Surf Life Saving volunteers for their commitment and diligence throughout the season.”
The beach patrol season will resume on Saturday 24 September 2022. In the meantime, there are safe swimming options available for the community throughout the winter period at Grant McBride Baths, Toukley Aquatic Centre, Gosford Pool and Peninsula Leisure Centre.
