Capstone Editing Announces Two Grants to Support Indigenous High School Students and Mid-Career Researchers

An Australian business established to support students and academics is offering two grants to ease the pressures of two vastly different groups: Indigenous high school students and mid-career researchers.

Capstone Editing was founded by Dr Lisa Lines, a former history lecturer and academic editor, who understands the difficulties faced by varying groups in academia. “Sadly, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students remain vastly underrepresented in tertiary education in Australia.” Dr Lines said. “... not enough has been done to rectify this situation.”

Speaking on the state of mid-career researchers, “We recognise that many mid-career researchers suffer from job instability and insecurity. According to the National Tertiary Education Union, only one-third of employees in higher education have ongoing employment.” Dr Lisa Lines said.

“Lack of sufficient governmental investment into the research sector has meant that funding is becoming even more competitive for mid-career researchers - especially those in the fields of science and medicine”

To acknowledge and address these dilemmas, Capstone Editing is offering two new grants.

The Capstone Editing Scholarship for Indigenous High School Students

This Scholarship provides A$1,000 of funding to one South Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in Year 11 or Year 12 per year to assist them to complete their secondary schooling and enter university. These funds can be used in any way that will assist the individual student in their education, such as for tutoring, textbooks, computer equipment, school uniforms or travel to and from school.

Applications close on 1 April 2019 and the winner will be announced on 1 May 2019.

The Capstone Editing Grant for Mid-Career Researchers

This grant provides up to A$5,000 of seed funding for one researcher per year to undertake an innovative research project. The expectation is that the research project will gather preliminary data and lead to the development of a research council funding application.
