All Health Begins in the Gut
Our digestive systems work hard day in, day out to keep us healthy and happy. When our gut health is compromised we can face health consequences. Some of the most common health issues we deal with today can be directly linked to poor digestive health and unhealthy food choices.
The gut contains approximately 70% of the body’s immune system with signs of poor gut health including bloating, discomfort, irregularity and irritable bowel syndrome as well diseases like diabetes, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, eczema and autoimmune disorders.

6 Signs and symptoms of poor gut health:
1. Digestive issues
Abdominal bloating, pain, wind, reflux, constipation, diarrhoea and irregular bowels habits are all signs of an unhealthy gut. These symptoms may arise due to an imbalance in the health, number and diversity of the bacteria living inside your gut.
2. Low immune system
If you seem to pick up every bug or virus going around this may be a sign of poor gut health. With over 70% of the body’s immune system contained in the gut it makes sense. The gut and all the healthy bacteria that live in it called the microbiota also provide a physical barrier against the outside environment. The microbiota also help protect against sickness by producing substances that make the gut environment hostile for invading bacteria and competing for food and space.
3. Poor nutrient absorption
A healthy gut also plays a significant role when it comes to helping your body produce and synthesise vitamins and minerals. When your gut bacteria is out of whack, your body has a harder time getting enough of the essential vitamins and minerals including Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Vitamin K and Magnesium.
4. Weight gain, sugar cravings, overeating
Recent research shows that people who have a stable weight over nine years or lose weight, have a larger number of different types of microbes in their guts, eat more fibre and have a higher abundance of certain types of gut microbes. Scientists have also found that gut bacteria actually secrete special proteins that are similar to hunger-regulating hormones; leptin and ghrelin. These proteins affect both our food cravings and mood.
5. Anxiety or depression
You may be surprised to know the gut and brain talk to each other. There is a strong link between the microbes in your gut and depression, anxiety and stress. A compromised gut can affect your ability to use serotonin - your happy hormone - and vitamin D within your body. One study even found that some of the biproducts of fibre digestion increased levels of serotonin. Two human studies looking at people with major depression also found that their population of gut bacteria differed from healthy volunteers.
6. Skin conditions
If you've been struggling with skin issues such as; acne, rosacea and dermatitis, with no avail from expensive skin care products, the answer may just lie within your gut! The gut and skin interact, each one affecting the other. For example inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is also associated with a higher risk of developing an inflammatory skin condition, such as psoriasis and rosacea.
A poor gut microbiome can alter the integrity of the intestinal wall resulting in a "leaky gut" and consequently increased inflammation. The symptoms of inflammation can manifest differently in individuals, however for many it has a direct effect on the skin, resulting in inflammatory conditions such as; acne, rosacea and dermatitis. Different food intolerances and allergies may also manifest into skin conditions.
