Alana Valentine Tackles Health and Body Positivity in New Play
Drawing on interviews with real designers, brides, and scientists, Made To Measure shines with Valentine’s signature authenticity, empathy, and humour.
Valentine was commissioned by The Charles Perkins Centre, an Australian medical research institute, clinic and education hub that primarily focuses on diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. The CPC seeks to educate and change minds about people living with metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes and kidney disease. Instead of pressuring these people to fit the norm and telling them what they should/shouldn’t do, the CPC looks to support them in their endeavours to work and connect as a community, and bring about change of their own accord.
Valentine saw this as a great opportunity to write about the elusive ‘ideal wedding day body’ and the issues and contradictions that come with putting yourself on show in such a public way.
Made To Measure seeks to go beyond the debate about fat shaming and health in a funny and deeply character-based play that raises questions rather than gives answers. Attacking prejudices and assumptions, while empowering those who may feel shame, guilt or pressure from society as a whole.
Confronting, informative and moving. Made To Measure is not to be missed!
