The NSW Companion Animals Register is Going “Self-Serve”

Archived 29 Sep 2016 - Posted: 31 Jul 2016
The Pet Registry is managed by the NSW government Office of Local Government and is a state-wide register of microchip numbers to identify cats and dogs.

If you have a registered cat or dog that goes missing, the microchip can be scanned so that your pet can be returned to you.

Owners are being encouraged to set up an online profile and claim their microchipped pet, and to also register ownership of any new cats and dogs. You'll be able to update your contact details, and reporting missing pets, as well as change ownership details, when required.

To get your pet microchipped or find out the microchip number of an existing pet, you can take your pet to your local vet.

Breeders are also encouraged to make an online profile to register litters and transfer pets to their new owners.

On this website you can:

  • create your own profile and link it to your pet’s details
  • update owner details like addresses and phone numbers
  • pay Lifetime Registration fees with Visa or Mastercard
  • list your pet as missing or deceased
  • transfer ownership from one person to another

If you do not have access to the internet you can continue to do these things at your local Council using paper forms but for many pet owners the online access will be quick and convenient.

You can also refer to the website to find out details of the your duties and responsibilities as a pet owner in NSW.
